The Lealta Performing Arts Association was formed during the summer of 2001 in the homes of it's future members. Lealta Performing Arts Association was formed with an Executive Board and prospective team members. The prospective team members invited Ron Dettman, Buffy Stinchfield, and Nanette Arnold to be the instructors of the new winter guard team of San Diego. The team was picked, and the sixteen (16) member team began rehearsing and eventually performing the show titled, "Streamlines." The team of 2001-2002 competed in WGASC and WGI regional competitions. At the WGI World Championships, the 2001-2002 tea was honored in being named the Independent "A" World Champions of 2002, and the team was promoted to Independent Open. In 2003 the team was made up of twenty-eight (28) talented men and women from all over the United States. During this season, the team was pleased to have members from Colorado, Ohio, and Riverside, Ca. in addition to local San Diegans. The ages of members ranged from 14-22 years of age. Once again Lealta was instructed by Ron Dettman, Buffy Stinchfield, and Nanette Arnold. The team of 2002-2003 competed in WGASC and WGI regional competitions. The 2002-2003 team was extremely honored at the WGI World Championships to become the Independent Open World Championships of 2003, and the team was promoted to the Independent World Class. Lealta winter guard has also made color guard history, with being one of the only two units ever to be promoted in consecutive years from Independent "A" to Independent Open, to Independent World. The 2003-2004 season was Lealta's first year in Independent World Class. Lead by instructors Ron Dettman and Buffy Stinchfield, the twenty-six (26) guard performed Lealta Reloaded, with musical selections from The Matrix trilogy soundtracks. The show was high-energy, fast-paced, and eye-popping. Lealta was fortunate to have WGI in their own backyard. Traveling the whopping 15 miles to Cox Arena, located on San Diego State's campus, Lealta performed in WGI Nations for the first time as an Independent World Class Winter Guard. The 2004-2005 brought many new things to the Lealta Performing Arts Association, and also to San Diego. Lealta welcomed Chris Velez, Masahiro Kajiwara, Melissa Dougherty and Karl Lowe to a fresh new group of individuals who were eager to learn. With twenty-one (21) performers at the beginning of the season Lealta started learning "The Raven". As each week passed throughout the season, the show grew and evolved as well as the performers. On the stage at the UD Arena we were at twenty-four (24) performers. Lealta brought a show to Dayton like no other this season. Lou Reed's version of "The Raven" filled UD Arena with a tale of love, anguish, hate, and passion. Lealta came home from Dayton with an 80.6. In 2008 The Lealta Performing arts Association formed the Lealta All Stars an Independent Regional A guard for Elementary and Middle Schoolers. In its inaugural season the AllStars Took 1st place in WGASC Championship Competition.
